Prevention of childhood obesity from a life course approach in the first years

Abstract

It has been estimated that overweight and obesity were responsible of 3.4 million deaths worldwide. The prevalence of overweight and obesity has also increased substantially in children and adolescents by 47% in low income countries. Materials and methods: a review of the literature in indexed databases (EMBASE, PubMed, Cochrane, CINAHL, CDSR, DARE, PSYINFO, Central, Clinical Trials and Medline-Ovid) was performed with MeSH type descriptors from 2000 to 2018; 698 articles were found, of which 57 were selected  Results: the risk factors for childhood overweight and obesity are nutritional status of the mother, consumption of coffee, cigarette, metabolic profile and diet in pregnancy, caesarean section, birth weight ? 3.86 kg, milk formula, breastfeeding <12 months, environmental contamination, use of sex hormones and antibiotics and sleep cycle in children <12 hours. Conclusions: the prevention of overweight and obesity requires early and sustained approaches over time, which should consider a wide range of factors from the life course approach, as well as involvement with other actors, to maintain healthy populations and prevent to the diseases derived from these conditions.
