Economic valuation of ecosistemic services to support fishing activities by mangrove in Cienaga Grande de Santa Marta

Abstract

This article objective is the economic valuation of one of the many ecosystem services provided by the mangrove forests support fisheries. For this assessment, market prices are applied including nine commercial species, among them fish and shellfish, caught by artisanal fishermen in the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta (CGSM). The results obtained are compared with studies in Mexico under the same methodology and show high productivity levels of the mangrove ecosystem of the CGMS, although in the study area a there is no regulation of the fishing activity and the mangrove ecosystem services have been subjected to strong dynamics of degradation and recovery.
