Automatic vehicle location (AVL) systems are a fundamental part of fleet management systems for public land transport in the world. In Colombia, some public transportation sectors have already implemented these systems in their vehicles, demonstrating their importance in the operation of public transportation. However, the operating conditions of some of the vehicles that transit through the country, generate different vulnerabilities that can cause a malfunction in the AVL, and consequently, in the transportation service they provide. This article presents an analysis of the needs and vulnerabilities of AVLs that currently operate in public transportation vehicles in Colombia, and proposes technical recommendations that can solve current security problemsPublished
