Abstract

This work aims at determining reasons for the superficial deterioration of a set of plates and bobbins made of imported steel. This implies to analyze the type of deterioration of the components, and also whether the event took place on shipping or during storage. Tests performed included: visual analysis, infrared pectrophotometry of sodium chloride (NaCl) crystals, morphology of the deteriorated surface through optical microscopy, hemical analysis, metallography, and hardness. These tests showed that the presence of NaCl was the root cause for the corrosion process, indicating that the failure occurred during shipping.
