A "pedagogy of feelings": Education of self-esteem in transitional justice scenarios

Abstract

Most transitional justice mechanisms that are bound towards the rehabilitation of social bonds in post-conflict settings rely on a deep understanding of historical conditions that determine the conflict itself. Hence, the design of transitional justice strategies should pay attention to such precedents and its constant changing dynamic. This article presents how a historical setting of exclusion, violence and impunity in scenarios shapes conflict, and deteriorates transitional justice strategies implemented aiming social reconciliation. From a social sciences perspective, here is proposed an educational strategy named “pedagogy of the senses”, which is instrumental for transitional justice wherever its mechanisms are bound towards a personal, family and social psychological reconstruction of the foundations of self-esteem.

Hugo Fernando Guerrero Sierra, Universidad de La Salle, Colombia

PhD in International Relations, European Union and Globalization and MA in Public International Law and International Relations from the Complutense Universidad de Madrid. MA in International Cooperation at the same university. MA in Governance and Public Management by the Ortega y Gasset University Institute. Lawyer of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Researcher, teacher and speaker at several academic centers in Europe, the United States and Colombia. He is currently a teacher-researcher and director of the Research Group in Politics and International Relations of the Universidad de La Salle.

Juan Carlos Sánchez Sierra, Universidad de La Salle, Colombia

Ph.D. in Political and Social Thought (Virginia Tech) and MA in Latin American History (Virginia Tech). MA in African History (EHESS). He completed a postdoctoral stay at the CEIICH of the UNAM, where he undertook an investigation on paradigms of masculinity and heroism in journalism on the left in Mexico in the 1960s. Historian of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. He is a specialist in politics studies and comparative history. He is currently a professor-researcher at the Universidad de La Salle.
