Divine horsemen de Maya Deren: uma interpretagao vanguardista de vodu

Resumo

Maya Deren (1917-1961) foi uma cineasta de mediados do século XX que chegou a ser considerada a "Mae" do cinema experimental e de vanguarda dos Estados Unidos, gracas a filmes comoMeshes of the Afternoon (1943), At Land (1944), Ritual in Transfigured Time (1946). Entre 1947 e 1954, esta artista realizou quatro viagens a Haiti que lhe permitiram adentrarse no conhecimento da religiao vodu, dando por resultado diversos trabalhos. Primeiro, um libro sobre a religiao haitiana, Divine Horsemen: The Living Gods of Haiti, publicado em 1953, e, segundo, um material fílmico de quase 9 horas que, conquanto Deren nunca deu a conhecer em vida, veio á tona pública em 1981 a maneira de documentário. Neste trabalho examinamse algumas das representacoes e interpretacoes que sobre o vodu construiu e legou esta cineasta pioneira.

Maestra en Historia Moderna y Contemporánea. Licenciada en Estudios Latinoamericanos y doctorante en Estudios Latinoamericanos de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Proyecto de investigación: "Redes intelectuales en el Caribe, 1880-1930. Un abordaje desde la historia intelectual de la República Dominicana", Instituto de Investigaciones "José María Luis Mora", México.
