Premenstrual syndrome and exercise: an integrative review

Abstract

Introduction: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a clinical entity that affects many women in the world. This syndrome is characterized by the presence of numerous psychological and somatic symptoms present in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, depending on the severity and frequency of the symptoms, it can affect their social, educational, and work activities. Numerous approaches from different disciplines have been considered, approaching in this integrative review the treatment from physical activity and exercise.

Methodology: An integrative review of articles was conducted using the PRISMA method, including reports of randomized clinical trials and quasi-experimental studies that relate exercise to premenstrual syndrome symptoms.

Results: 8 clinical trials and 4 quasi-experimental studies were analyzed, in terms of population involved, type and time of intervention, evaluation instruments used, and results found. It is concluded that practicing various techniques or disciplines provide benefits in terms of reducing both physical and psychological symptoms, as well as the combination of physical activity with other treatment modalities.
