Abstract

Objective: To determine the influence of quality of life on the self-perceived health of older adults who attend the Health Promotion and Maintenance Programs in a State-run social enterprise of the municipality of Sincelejo, Sucre.

Materials and methods: A quantitative, observational, analytical, cross-sectional study was carried out in a sample of 393 elderly, selected by non-random convenience sampling. The quality-of-life instrument was applied: Multicultural Quality of Life Index, including Self-Perceived Health. Data were submitted to univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analyses, the latter using the generalized linear model of Poisson Regression with robust variances. The confidentiality of the information was maintained, the anonymity of the participants and the informed consent was completed.

Results: 55.98 % of the participants had a positive perception of their health status, while 44.02 % had a negative perception. There is a statistically significant relationship between global quality-of-life and Self-perceived Health, the lower the quality-of-life, the lower the prevalence of positive Self-perceived Health (Good quality of life; RP=0.814; 95 %CI=0.750 - 0.884; Regular quality of life RP=0.923 95%CI=0.857 - 0.993).

Conclusion: Aging is a stage of life that, due to its characteristics, affects physical and mental health, which, in turn, affects the quality-of-life of elderly, and sequentially, the way in which they perceive their own state of health.
