Abstract

Municipal Biowastes are characterized for their high moisture content, little porosity, acid pH and low C/N ratio that affect composting. This study evaluated the influence of Star Grass (Cynodon Plectostachyus) as bulking agent for composting. The experiment was carried out at laboratory scale using two substrates: i) B (100% Biowaste) and ii) E (83% Biowaste + 17% Star Grass). Incorporation of Star Grass improved carbon content, pH and structural support both in substrate E and its product, allowing the achievement of the thermophilic phase in less time and increasing its length. Furthermore, he agronomic value of the product also improved.
