Solid Waste Management, an Environmental Problem in the University
Abstract
Results from the University Environmental Responsibility and Solid Waste
Management plan in 2019, in a private university in Colombia, is presented
as a case of study. The main purpose of this research is to analyze the
problems associated to solid waste management, and the implementation
of environmental responsibility in the main campus. We used a mixed
methodology, based on documentary review techniques, photo-narratives,
category matrix, focus group, and surveys to stablish the grade of success
of these programs. It is highlighted that, although the university has implemented
an environmental management system under the standard ISO
14001: 2015, the way in which this process is carried out by the institution
shows shortcomings in its implementation, and the university needs
to strengthen it through training processes in solid waste management;
maximizing its use and implementing strategies regarding its disposal.
