Abstract

The following article explores open innovation in SMEs, approaching the concept from policies and internationalization. Using a bibliometric review, it was possible to identify the main topics investigated in recent years. The results indicate that this field is oriented to the relationship between the adoption of open innovation and the performance of the company; factors that hinder adoption; the opportunities offered by open innovation to improve management; network management; and incoming and outgoing innovation. European countries continue to lead this field of research, and new authors and other study variables, such as internationalization, appear. It is evident that the internationalization of SMEs is achieved through the consolidation of open innovation in National Innovation Systems (NIS) and international networks.
