Self-concept and first pregnancy teenagers single

Abstract

Pregnancy in adolescence can put a young woman and her baby at risk, because she has to face it when has not been able to elaborate childhood world lacks. Besides, she is living a period of crisis in psycho affective and biological maturation, and has neither profiled nor defined her self-concept, nor achieved a personal autonomy (Machargo, 1991). Thus, she must bring up his child without helping. This increases the risk for both, the mother and her child.

This article presents results of the research “Self-concept in pregnant primiparous single adolescents from low socio economical stratum, in Barranquilla, Colombia”.

It was a descriptive research with a sample of 30 pregnant primiparous single adolescents, from low socio economical stratum, in Barranquilla, who were applied Tennessee’s self-concept test (Fitts, 1988).

Findings allow identifying the characteristics of self-concept in pregnant primiparous single adolescents, through their internal dimensions (identity, self satisfaction and conduct) and external ones (physical, ethic - moral, personal, family and social being) from Fitts’ multidimensional theory (1988). Results show a low tendency in most dimensions.
