Invulnerable children; daily protective factors that favor the development of children who live in contexts of poverty

Abstract

The project “Infancy and Life Quality” has carried out several researches in order to solve the problems that affect disadvantaged children living in extreme poverty conditions. The researches aims to approach and to adequately understand these children’s daily life reality for, in such a way, identifying those factors which protect them from adversity and allow them to excel. Children who are able to overcome adversity, negative consequence of poverty and marginality, and are able to advance in the development are called “resilient children”, and the ability of invulnerability before adverse situations that is developed by these children is determined by protection factors which are projected in child’s personality (self-esteem, confidence, autonomy, independence, sociability, competence, etc.), family (warm links, stability, safety, norms, values, competent parental attitude, etc.), and community (social relationship network, stability, appurtenance, initiative, helping, continuity). The project has researched the taking of conceptual and affective perspective, the self concept, the autonomy behaviors, social networks, and protective factors in children of poor sectors. Results show that even when the environment have not permitted them an adequate cognitive development, these children have a social intelligence which enables them to survive in spite of the daily lacks and gives the researchers a hope light for achieving to make better these children quality of life.
