The horror of uncertainty: psychological intervention with victims of kidnapping

Abstract

This article deals with psychological implications and side effects generated by the kidnapping experience on the victims and his relatives, and it also presents psychological intervention alternatives with the kidnapped and their family.The event of kidnapping is divided into two stages: the first stage, «the kidnapping threat», is analyzed through all the derived cognitive elements and the activated emotions which generate dysfunctions and drastic life style changes. The second stage, «fulfilling the threat», deals with the five relevant moments in this crisis: holding up, captivity, liberation, family reunion, and overcoming the trauma. The psychological assistance is enhanced in the different moments.This situation is analyzed from the psychopathology point of view. It is called post-traumatic stress, and it includes the corresponding symptoms and the necessary restitutions at all levels which are the main objective of the psychological backup.
