Abstract

This article presents a revision of the concept of aging. It puts forward the need to revise the stages of psychological development described by Erikson. The recent demographic changes and the increase of life expectancy justify this conceptual revision. Currently, the third age is not the last age. The characteristics which have been attributed to this period of life, now belong to fourth age. The Human Services Department of Hartford has created Club 55, a project based on this new paradigm. Key words: Psychosocial development, self integrity, hopelessness, quality of life, elderly adulthood.
