Abstract

To assess periradicular lesions, imaging exams such as Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) are used. This test allows for a three-dimensional exploration of the maxillofacial skeleton and the Periapical Index (PAI), thus assisting in providing an accurate diagnosis and prognosis for treatment.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of periradicular lesions in individuals who sought dental treatment and underwent a CBCT.

Methods: An observational, cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted. A total of 267 CBCT exams were evaluated. Variables such as gender, age, tooth involved, and PAI were analyzed. Frequency tables, bar charts, and measures of central tendency were used for statistical analysis.

Results: Of all CBCT scans, 70,2% were of female patients. 1,6% showed at least one periradicular lesion, predominantly in teeth 3.7 (18,9%), 4.5 (13,2%), and 3.2 (11,3%). The number 3 score of the Periapical Index PAI, CBCT was 52,7%.

Conclusions: The prevalence of periradicular lesions is high in this study population. The prevalence was higher in women, adults, in lower teeth, and with a periapical radiolucency diameter > 2-4 mm.
