Abstract

Objective: To determine the ICD and the IDD in a sample of individuals with genetic or early-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD), who are patients attending the Neurosciences Group of Antioquia (GNA).

Methodology: This was a cross-sectional study with a convenience sample of 49 individuals. To determine the DDI, the consumption of each food group was divided into quintiles and to determine the DDI, the foods were classified into ten groups according to the FAO methodology. The Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis, and X2 statistical tests were applied to compare the values between groups.

Results: The average age of the participants was 53.9±7.0 years; 63.3% were women. Furthermore, older people with low socioeconomic status had a diet of lower quality and diversity, although without statistically significant differences. However, a significantly less diverse diet was found in rural area residents (p < 0.05). Another finding was an inverse moderate and statistically significant correlation between DDI and disease progression (r = 0.325 p < 0.05).

Conclusions: An association was found between progress in the stages of AD and the deterioration of diet, therefore, adequate nutrition in quantity and nutritional quality should be encouraged, ensuring that those with AD manage to adhere to healthy eating patterns, which in turn can help reduce nutritional deterioration and the appearance of other comorbidities.
