Climatic and Socioeconomic Factors Related to the Incidence of Dengue in the Department of Magdalena (Colombia)

Introduction: Dengue represents one of the most important mosquito-borne viral diseases in the
world, with the vector, virus, and human host vulnerable to temporary climatic factors and social
determinants.
Objective: To analyze the epidemiological patterns of dengue incidence in the subregions of the
Magdalena department and its relationship with climatic factors (2013-2019) and socioeconomic
factors (2018).
Method: A multi-group was conducted, evaluating the association between average exposure levels
of climatic variables (2013-2019) and socioeconomic variables (2018) and the incidence of dengue
in the subregions of Magdalena.
Results: The central and southern subregions of Magdalena showed the highest cumulative infection
rates. Socioeconomic variables were the most relevant in explaining the variation in dengue
cases, while average relative humidity was the most significant in the multivariate analysis.
Discussion: Climatic factors showed a moderate correlation with dengue incidence, with relative
humidity being the most influential variable. In this regard, socioeconomic conditions, such as poverty
and limited access to basic services, increased the population’s vulnerability to the disease.
Conclusions: The combination of climatic and socioeconomic factors affects the distribution of
dengue. This underscores the necessity for comprehensive interventions that improve social and
environmental conditions to reduce the disease burden in the Magdalena department.
