Abstract

Abnormalities in the development of the placental vasculature at the beginning of pregnancy have a fundamental role in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia, producing peripheral
hypoperfusion, hypoxia and placental ischemia, generating release of anti-angiogenic factors
in the maternal circulation, altering maternal systemic endothelial function, causing hypertension and other manifestations.
Objective: Description of the anatomopathological alterations of the placentas in preeclamptic and non-preeclamptic women who attended the obstetrics and gynecological service of the Hospital Universidad del Norte de Soledad (Atlántico), 2018-2019.

Methodology: A descriptive, observational cross-sectional study was carried out. The data
were collected, through the database of the pathology service of the Hospital Universidad del Norte, later the clinical histories were used to complete the required information and make a database with the variables to cross them and analyze them.
The results showed that the average placental weight in patients with preeclampsia in relation to healthy patients did not have significant differences, in addition, the predominant type of birth in both population samples is cesarean section. It was observed that at lower
maternal age, greater weight and placental size in healthy unlike preeclamptic.
Concluding that the weight was higher in term pregnancies and maternal age, as well as the number of pregnancies intervenes in the placental weight and the development of the pathology. Likewise, it was found that prenatal controls were key to perform the diagnosis of preeclampsia..
