Abstract

Objetive: To determine the quality of life and psychological well-being in non-institutionalized older people in Santiago de Chile during a period of social outbreak.

Methodology: Non-experimental, descriptive, and transversal design study. The sample consisted of 59 people over 65 years of age who live in the community (13 men), average age 75.61±7.39 years; on-probabilistic convenience sampling was used. The measurements occurred during the months of October 2019 to February 2020, during the period of “social outbreak” that occurred in Chile.

Quality of life was measured through the WHOqol Bref and psychological well-being through the Ryff Psychological Well-being Scale.

Results: Quality of life, both in general and in its subdimensions, was similar between men and women. For Psychological Well-being, the general average score was higher in women, marking differences in the dimensions: positive relationships, autonomy, mastery of the environment and purpose in life (p < 0.05); being lower than in men in self-acceptance and growth (p < 0.05).

Conclusions: The levels of Quality of Life and Psychological Well-being were lower than those obtained in previous studies, which could suggest that the upheaval generated during the social outbreak could have negatively affected them.
