Abstract

In this article I defend the need to include the political agency dimension in a democratic legitimacy criterion, especially the ones deriving from deliberative conceptions. In order to achieve this, I develop an intuitive argument to show that if political agency is not considered as relevant for democratic legitimacy, some political schemes that do not require any significant degree of political participation could be accepted as legitimate. Once this is proven, I argue that although the Senian Capability Approach has tried to show the intrinsic connection between agency dimension and democracy, it lacks a precise definition of political agency which should include the individual objectives of the other as a limit to political objectives.
