Analysis of the relative efficiency of the banking system in Colombia in the period 1993-2003 and a strategic proposal of strengthening.

Abstract

This artide shows an analysis of the relative efftciency of Colombian bank sector through applying
Data Encircling Analysis (DEA) for the period 1993-2003. 1t also presents a strategic proposal,
at macro and micro level, which permits the sector to improve its productivity levels, decrease its vulnerabiliy
to economical sector crisis, assume the leadership that corresponds at business level, and be
prepared to face the challenges of international agreements.
This article attempts to analyze the behavior of banks in last decade and at the beginning of
present decade in order to find explanations about current behavior of these entities.
