Bystanders in situations of bullying victimization: characterizing the role

Abstract

This research was to understand the role of bystanders in situationsof bullying victimization, characterizing the role and focus its representationsand emotional elements Using qualitative methodology wasapplied instrument Efectos Psicológicos Roles Intimidación EscolarEPRIE (Marmolejo & Cuevas, 2010), based on the Scan-Bullying (DelBarrio, Almeida, Van Der, Barrios and Gutierrez, 1999), to a sample of32 students, 16 belonging to public school and 16 private one the cityof Buga, Valle del Cauca. The information was obtained through focusgroups. We found different kinds of bystanders, who adopt either roleaccording to certain conditions victimized also, found that most of itsrepresentations encourage the perpetuation of bullying, to admire thegroup of bullies position and in turn underestimate the status of victims.
