Assertiveness and self-esteem freshmen from the health sciences faculty in a public university of Santa Marta

Abstract

This research examined the social skills Assertiveness and Selfesteem in students of first semester for all programs assigned to the Faculty of Health Sciences and was made in the positivist

paradigm, type in quantity, the type of design was correlational. The behavior that is socially skilful set of behaviors emitted by an individual in an interpersonal context, expressing feelings, attitudes, desires, opinions or rights of that person in a manner appropriate to the situation, while respecting those behaviors in others and usually resolves the immediate problems of the situation while minimizing the likelihood of future problems. Assertiveness is often combined with self-esteem, and psychological elements necessary for an individual to be competent in the life of an assertive manner, although not the only ones to consider.

The sample comprised 200 students who entered the First Semester of Academic Programs in Medicine, Psychology, Nursing and Dentistry, during the period 2008-2. However, 47 students did not wish to participate in research for different reasons, being then in the final sample 153 students.
