Abstract

Social support is defined as “an exchange of resources between at least two people, from the provider’s or the recipient’s perspective aiming to improve the recipient’s well-being condition». Methodology: It is a descriptive cross-sectional study which included 542 university students over 18 years of age, convenience sampled; sociodemographic characteristics were evaluated, and the Medical Outcomes Study-Social Support Survey questionnaire was used. An exploratory factor analysis was carried out using the main components method to evaluate the hierarchical structure, varimax rotation, according to the degree of correlation between them was also used. The correlation matrix’s determinant and the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin test (valid with values above 0.5) were determined through Bartlett's sphericity test. To estimate reliability, Cronbach's Alpha was used after factors’ consolidation. Results: Information was obtained from 510 individuals, of which 263 were women (51.6%); the age was 24.8 out of 2.6. The exploratory factor analysis showed three factors that explained 63.559% of the variance. The reagents showed factor loadings ranging from 0.442 to 0.784. The internal consistency by factor presented ?-Cronbach values in a range of 0.821 to 0.913 and a general ? of 0.920. Conclusion: The psychometric properties of the questionnaire in university students show acceptable values; However, these results should be used with caution, as it is necessary to develop other studies that corroborate our study’s results.
