Abstract

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a prevalent disease with a significant impact on public health. Telehealth, as a remote healthcare tool, has emerged as an alternative to improve access to, and control of, T2DM.

Objective: To describe the usefulness of telehealth as a healthcare tool in adult patients with T2DM.

Method: A systematic search of the Pubmed and LILACS electronic databases was conducted to analyze the use, advantages, and disadvantages of telemedicine in adult patients with T2DM.

Results: 22 articles were identified, of which 19 were included in this review. Most studies have demonstrated that telemedicine follow-up in T2DM patients is effective and improves the control of clinical parameters, especially when using glycated hemoglobin as a reference paraclinical test.

Conclusion: Telehealth is an effective support tool for the follow-up of patients with T2DM, improving clinical health outcomes, especially in long-term programs and in mixed mode.
