Abstract

Objective: To analyze mortality trends due to stomach cancer in Colombia from 2011 to 2022 and their differences by sex, age groups and natural regions.

Methods: Ecological study, using deaths from stomach cancer between 2011 and 2022 in Colombia; age-standardized mortality rates were calculated according to sex, age group and natural regions, to analyze trends by estimating joinpoint(s) and using the average annual percentage change (AAPC) as a summary measure through segmented regression models with Joinpoint Regression Desktop version 5.0 software.

Results: The standardized mortality rate (SMR) trend for stomach cancer in Colombia was slightly decreasing (10.10 x 100 000 inhabitants in 2011 to 10.03 x 100 000 inhabitants in 2022) (CPAP: -1.83), with decreasing trends evident in 2 of 5 natural regions. No differences in trends were found, there was a parallel between women (CPAP -1.48) versus men (-1.82) and at older age (CPAP for over 65 years: -4.89 versus CPAP for 45 - 64 years: -2.36); it is highlighted that there was no high mortality in any of the Colombian natural regions: Amazon, Andean, Caribbean, Orinoco and Pacific.

Conclusions: The trend of MSD due to stomach cancer was slightly decreasing for the period 2011 - 2022 with differences by sex, age groups and natural regions.
