Abstract

Introduction: In low and middle-income countries, the prevalence of depression during pregnancy is estimated at 25.8%. Postpartum depression affects 25.8% of postpartum women in low-income countries and 20.7% in middle-income countries. The finding that 50% of postpartum depression episodes actually begin in pregnancy leaves the need to seek interventions that can be applied from this period due to the potential consequences to the well-being of women, children, and families. Therefore, it is necessary to identify current evidence of effective non-pharmacological interventions for perinatal depression associated with pregnant women.

Materials and methods: An integrative review was performed following the Toronto and Remington guidelines that establish six stages to synthesize the evidence found. The databases consulted were EBSCOhost, PubMed, Elsevier ScienceDirect, and Ovid Medline; articles were retrieved in English and Spanish, published between 2019 and 2023.

Results: Fifteen articles were identified, 6 were randomized clinical studies and 9 were systematic reviews with meta-analysis, in which psychological therapies (including cognitive behavioral and interpersonal), mindfulness and peer support were recognized as the interventions that have shown the most significant data in the prevention and treatment of perinatal depression in their application in pregnant women.
