Abstract

This essay means to make a contribution to the recent field of “business ethics”. To achieve this, we propose the analysis of solidarity in its double aspect, the affective and the rational aspect, that is to say, the solidarity that is spontaneously generated amongst individuals that share common interests and the solidarity that is produced amongst heterogeneous groups with different interests in search for the good of all. In one case we may talk of horizontal solidarity and in another of vertical solidarity. The experiences of two German companies (VW, Ingelheim Böringer) will be used to illustrate cases of vertical solidarity different from those of the welfare state. The issue is to point towards a solidarity as a structure in which both employees and employers can gain.
