Abstract
This document presents the results of a documentary, historiographical, and oral history investigation
into the Viejo (Old) and Nuevo (New) Chagres. This work is part of the multidisciplinary project “The
Origins of the San Lorenzo Castle and the Village of Chagres” (FID22-013), funded by the National Secretariat
of Science, Technology and Innovation of Panama (SENACYT). The archaeological and historical
project sought to reconstruct the history of the Castle of San Lorenzo, located at the mouth of the Chagres
River (Colón, Panama), and to present the origins of the old village of the same name. This town
emerged during the construction of this military structure, which defended the Caribbean entrance to
what is now Panamanian territory. The people of Chagres lived in “Old” Chagres from its beginnings in
the 17th century until 1916, when U.S. Canal Zone authorities relocated them to their current location.
For the first time, sources are compiled that narrate and synthesize the village’s history within the context
of Panama’s transit zone between the 17th and 20th centuries, for which it was a key intercontinental
commercial hub. This history is interwoven with two group interviews and a workshop conducted
with three age groups from this community located in the province of Colon, Panama. These interviews
reveal that people over the age of 50 remember details about the relocation and part of the city’s rich history,
while younger generations are almost completely unaware of it.
