Bayunca: a site of frees of the province of Cartagena in the first half of the nineteenth century

Abstract

This article is based mainly on the origin of the population of Bayunca as a site for free people created following the declive of an estate called “La Bayunca” this was composed of eight knight´s fee  of land which belonged to Messrs Cosme Damián Zapata and Tomasa Calvo. After analyzing two hypotheses which have been repeated in the collective memory of the community. Bayunca a native (Indian or Aboriginal)village or Bayunca a Palenque (free black slaves areas) one adds a third possibility a site of free people  formed following the declive of an estate called La Bayunca composed of eight knight´s fee  according to publics records No. 4,5 y 16 consulted in the historical archives of Cartagena. The origen of the human establishments based on areas of free people  has be come more on for the entire region, as in the case of Barranquilla and its vicinity in accordance with work performed by historians such as Jose Agustin Blanco Barros and Jorge Conde Calderon

Licenciada en Ciencias Sociales y Económicas de la Universidad del Atlántico y candidata a Magister en la Maestía en Historia Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena en Convenio con la Universidad de Cartagena. Actualmente es Directora del Archivo Histórico de Cartagena de Indias.
