Scientific evidence related to internet addiction disorders: A scope review

Objective: To synthesize scientific evidence related to internet addiction disorders, seeking to identify the contributions of cognitive-behavioral therapy, in this context. Method: Scoping review was conducted, involving meta-analysis research published between 2019 and 2024.
Results: A total of 28 publications were retrieved, covering the following aspects: “Diagnosis”, via imaging and its relationship related to personality traits; “Risk factors,” mainly related to childhood trauma, loneliness, internet use time, aggression, and impulsiveness in risky decisions; “Protective factors,” involving self-control, awareness, kindness, self-esteem, intelligence, life satisfaction, and education; “Prevalence,” which varied between 8% and 37% in different countries; “Comorbidities,” which included eating disorders; anxiety, depression; decision-making deficits and insomnia; “Treatments / Interventions,” highlighting the practice of physical exercise and mixed approaches, involving medications and cognitive-behavioral therapy associated with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS); and lastly, impaired “Quality of life.”
