Las funciones ejecutivas y el ajedrez: una revisión sistemática
Keywords:
ajedrez, funciones ejecutivas, memoria de trabajo, flexibilidad, planificación, inhibiciónAbstract
Objective: To carry out a review of the scientific literature, through the search for research in the last decade, on the relationships between executive functions and chess. Method: a search was carried out in the Web of Science, Scielo, Pubmed, Scopus and Google Scholar databases, for the period 2012-2022, using the systematic review methodology. Results: 66 articles were found and only 13 that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed. It was possible to identify chess relationships with 4 executive functions; inhibition, flexibility, working memory and planning, as well as general executive functioning. Conclusion: most of the investigations of the last 10 years provide evidence that allows us to demonstrate the hypothesis that the practice of chess is associated with better executive performance; there is also a single article that, on the contrary, rejects this relationship, Discussion: the results have suggested that the systematic practice of chess contributes to the development of executive functioning. Because it is an easily accessible practice, its benefits could be taken advantage of by incorporating it into various educational settings.
Keywords: chess, executive functions, working memory, inhibition, flexibility, planning.
