Abstract

This article provides an updated overview about the studies on emotion regulation in children and adolescents from the perspective of developmental psychology. It is mainly based on articles published in indexed psychology journals between the years 2001 and 2016. Conceptual aspects of the definition of emotional regulation are discussed, followed by an examination of neurobiological and environmental influences that impact the regulation of emotion during infancy and adolescence. Finally, characteristics of the development of the regulatory processes are analyzed from infancy to late adolescence, emphasizing the vital regulatory scopes for each period. The ultimate goal of this paper is to provide a documented basis for the study of emotion regulation in Colombian children and adolescents, a neglected population in regards to this topic.

Colette Sabatier, Profesora Emérita. Université de Bordeaux.

Profesora Emérita en la facultad de psicología del desarrollo y psicología intercultural de la Universidad de Bordeaux, Francia.

Doctora en psicología (graduada en la Universidad de Quebec Canadá, 1989). Ha sido profesora de psicología del desarrollo en la universidad de París X-Nanterre de 1993 hasta 2003 y responsable del estudio interdisciplinario de la familia en la Universidad de Victor Segalen desde 2005.

La Profesora Sabatier es miembro de varias asociaciones  científicas internacionales en psicología. Sus temas principales de investigación son: -Estudio de interacciones familiares, en particular relaciones entre padres e hijos. -Estudios intergeneracionales (abuelos, padres, hijos).  Sus enfoques teóricos son  de ecología humana y desarrollo social desde los cuales aborda las complejas interacciones  entre la sociedad, las familias y el  desarrollo del niño. En sus investigaciones considera varios aspectos culturales y  sua participado en estudios comparativos interculturales le ha valido numerosas publicaciones.
