Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic pathology that alters glucose levels in the body, type II more prevalent, which can lead to systemic modular diseases causing different metabolic disorders and cellular changes. As for ophthalmological alterations, diabetic retinopathy and keratoconjunctivitis sicca can be highlighted, where the latter can be defined as a chronic inflammatory condition causing damage to the ocular surface. Therefore, this review will provide information on the factors associated with the development of dry eye in diabetes, highlighting changes in glycemia on glucose metabolism affecting structures such as the lacrimal gland, meibomian glands, in the epithelial layer and in the microvasculature, generating different conditions such as neuropathic disorders that lead to ocular symptoms. Similarly, biological events are described such as changes in epigenetic expression, oxidative stress, and inflammation that presumably play an important role in diabetes and Dry Eye, for which, the evaluation and analysis of tears in this population is done necessary.
