Abstract

Pain is a sensory and emotional unpleasant experience that can arise as a result of actual or potential tissue damage; however, emphasis is placed on the fact that it is an individual and subjective experience. Pain presence can be associated with physiological modifications in different organs and systems, and its treatment requires the intervention of a multidisciplinary team. This study aimed to describe a clinical situation in nursing. It involves a 27-year-old male patient who is experiencing severe, acute pains, hospitalized due to traffic accident-related polytrauma, and post-surgical stabilization of fractures. A nursing care plan was developed following the NANDA-I, NOC, and NIC taxonomies, applying Elizabeth Lenz's theory of unpleasant symptoms. The interventions were both pharmacological and non-pharmacological, with multidisciplinary approaches to promote recovery and well-being. In the evaluation phase, changes in indicators that reflect the effectiveness of the activities were determined, demonstrating the usefulness of the applied theory and the importance of the nurse's role in the act of care and health recovery.
