Abstract
The stay of the writer Elizabeth Gross in Maracaibo during 1883 and 1896 and her book published in 1921 describing the experiences and details of that long journey of the German visitor are the theme of this article. Through the narrative of the German immigrant the author zooms in on the everyday lives and the social milieu of this Caribbean port. It stresses in the adaptation that the tropical weather requires, foods, diseases, relations with the indigenous population and the process of creollization. Furthermore it highlights the contributions of the German immigrants and visitors at the foundations of the Creole culture in western Venezuela
