Evaluation of Cement Removal during Retreatment in Oval Canals

Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the removal of two endodontic sealing agents
(resin-based and bioceramic) in oval canals of endodontically treated mandibular premolars using
R1-Claersonic® ultrasonic tip as a complementary method to removal of root canal filling with a
Reciproc® R50 file.
Material and methods: Fifty single-root samples were used, divided into two equal groups according
to the type of cement used (n = 25). The volume of the filling material was evaluated at three
key stages: after canal filling, after removal of root canal filling with Reciproc® R50 file and after
using the R1-Clearsonic® tip. The remaining volume evaluation was performed using Cone Beam
Computed Tomography and subsequent quantitative analysis with software 3D Slicer v.5.4.0.
Results: When comparing the remaining volumes of both cements after use R1-Clearsonic® tip, a
significantly greater reduction was observed with BioRoot Flow® cement than with AH Plus® cement
(p < 0.05). The data were tested for normality and homoscedasticity using the Shapiro-Wilk and
Levene tests, respectively. 
Conclusion: This study demonstrated that BioRoot Flow® cement has a lower resistant removal
than AH Plus® cement.
