Abstract

This study aimed to explain self-concept in communication disabled children due to hearing deficiencies and the functioning characteristics of their families within the framework of a resilient lifestyle. In order to do this, five children with their respective parents were chosen following preestablished criteria. A qualitative approach with the methodological design «case study with multiple evidence sources» was followed. Techniques used were qualitative: interviews in deep, and a projective technique: complementation. The scale of perception of childhood self-concept: collective form; list of phrases to complete; and a guide of questions for the interview were used as instruments.

Results showed that children included in research present basically positive self-concept and family characteristics. Finally, it is concluded that the interrelation of such elements has permitted these children to develop a resilient way of life.
