Abstract

Objective: To compare the knowledge about urban arbovirus infections and the risk factors that would favor its presence in neighborhoods of socio-economic background level two and three in Barranquilla city, northern Colombia.

Methodology: Descriptive and cross-sectional study where 100 surveys (25 dwellings/neighborhood), were applied to evaluate the population´s knowledge about different aspects of urban arbovirosis, as well as the socio-environmental conditions of risk for the presence of Aedes aegypti larvae and adults. Pedagogical talks, clean-up days and the elaboration of a leaflet to provide information to the population concerned was held.

Results: Respondents identified mosquitoes as transmitters of agents causing dengue, Zika or chikungunya. Larvae and adults of Ae. aegypti were identified, in intra and peridomicile niches as risk factors. The pedagogical activities encouraged good prevention habits where it was possible to eliminate potential breeding sites for Ae. aegypti. A Chi square-X2 test with 95% confidence intervals was used to analyze significant differences between knowledge and risk factors; and a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to infer the determinant variables that explain the level of knowledge about arbovirus infections and its risk factors. All analyses were performed with the SPSS software version 25.

Conclusion: No significant differences were found between the level of knowledge about arbovirosis; neighborhoods of socioeconomic level two had higher risk factors attributes; the presence of Ae. aegypti seems to be one of the main components that explains the occurrence of arboviruses in the urban populations evaluated.
