Abstract

Objective: To analyze the lived experience of the transition to old age and the health of a transsexual older adult.

Methodology: A case study with a qualitative approach under a phenomenological analysis, applying an in-depth interview to an older adult who self-identifies as transsexual, the data were analyzed, based on what was proposed by Tylor-Bogdan. Results: The participant is 64 years old, she is a lesbian woman, married to another woman, has a doctorate level of education, and works as a teacher. Another of the characteristics noted is that she defines herself as a feminist, binary, mestizo, non-Catholic woman. Three categories were found: Awareness of being a trans woman, perceived changes in comprehensive health before and after the transition, as well as the conditions of the transition.

Conclusions: Positive and negative perceptions are reflected in the transition to old age and health health systems and services must be updated to provide dignified care, with respect and empathy, taking into account their gender ideology.
