Abstract

Objective: To determine the percentage of prediction of parental stress and emotional competence
on role satisfaction and burden in grandmothers caring for grandchildren.
Methods: A quantitative, correlational–explanatory study was conducted. The sample consisted of
108 caregiving grandmothers—a size determined using the G*Power® software—collected through
convenience sampling. A demographic profile, the parental stress index, the emotional competence
scale, the care satisfaction subscale, and the Zarit scale were applied. Descriptive and inferential statistics, including Spearman and two linear regression models, were utilized. The study received
approval from a registered ethics committee.
Results: The mean age of caregiving grandmothers was 67.03 years (SD = 6.422), they care for at
least one grandchild (M 1.3, SD = 0.538), with an average care time of 5.21 days per week (SD = 1.434).
The majority are married (50.9%), with the predominant reason for caregiving being that the child
works (69.4%). Parental stress and emotional competence have a high explanatory power regarding
role satisfaction (F = 24.972, R2 = 0.322, p<0.05) and role burden (F = 33.291, R2 = 0.388, p<0.05).
Conclusion: It is confirmed that parental stress and emotional competence have an impact on
grandmothers caring for grandchildren, explaining 32.2% of role satisfaction and 38.8% of role burden.
The results highlight the importance of addressing parental stress and strengthening emotional
competence among grandmothers caring for grandchildren, as this approach could significantly
increase their role satisfaction and reduce the associated burden.
