Abstract

This essay makes a historical approach to the meanings made visible by the urban structure in Latin America from the Colony to the present. Beginning with the inherited separation between the rural and the urban worlds since the Colonial Period, the essay shows the changes in the urban grammar and in the symbolic imaginary due to the urban explosion of the Sixties, during the past century, creating a deteriorated concept of public space as sign of the denied city, and the later notion, during the 90,s, of public space as space of diversity. When establishing a bond between the political and economic perspectives of the different historical moments in Latin America and the spatial grammar of the city, the authors state that this relation produces a text that makes communication (or incommunication) possible between the citizens and the State.
