Predictors of abuse in the elderly in Colombia

Background: Elder abuse causes harm and suffering. Notably, cases of interpersonal and intrafamily violence are increasing.
Objective: To establish the predictive factors of elder abuse in Colombia, according to the Health, Welfare and Aging survey (SABE, 2015).
Methods: Observational, analytical, cross-sectional, and secondary-source study; it included 19,000 records with demographic, social, economic, and functional characteristics. Furthermore, an explanatory analysis and a predictive model using the backward method (Wald) were performed.
Results: It was found that 52.2% of the elderly were female and 58.3% were between 60 and 69 years of age. Additionally, 25% were from rural areas; 84% were from low socioeconomic strata. Moreover, 15.8% of the elderly had been abused and the associated characteristics were family, physical dependence, a lack of affiliation to Social and Health coverage, social participation, housing stratum, and being male.
Conclusions: Dysfunctional families with weak ties increase the risk of mistreatment of the elderly, especially if there is physical dependence. This can affect their physical, psychological, sexual, or economic well-being, thereby weakening their social support. Therefore, it is essential to detect mistreatment in time, investigate its forms and establish public policies that protect the rights of older adults.
