Frequency of mental disorders in patients over 18 years old attended psychiatric consultation at the Hospital Universidad del Norte in 2019 compared to the years 2020-2021

Abstract

Objective: To determine the variability in the frequency of consultations for mental disorders in patients older than 18 years treated in a psychiatric consultation at the Hospital Universidad del Norte (HUN) between 2019 compared to 2020, and 2021, a period that corresponds to the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in Colombia.

Materials and methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study. For data collection, a secondary-type database was obtained, obtaining a sample of 3,465 medical records and 1,193 patients. This information was stored in a database and analyzed; an increase in the number of consultations after mandatory confinement was found as a result. It was also shown that neurotic disorders were the most frequent (69 %); the most common family history of psychiatric disorders was mood disorders (5  %); the most frequent disorder was mixed anxiety and depression (33 %), and most had no additional diagnoses in controls (77 %).

Conclusions: This study was able to demonstrate an increase of in the consultation for psychiatric disorders during the pandemic of Covid-19 in HUN’s patients was demonstrated. These results showed that anxiety and depression disorders were the most common in the population of the HUN psychiatric consultation, and it is necessary to improve and continue the activities of promotion and prevention of mental health education.
