Abstract

Introduction: The consumption of cannabis takes a singular interest in the context of the university and the university, since its use favors the generation of relationships with their peers.

Objective: Describe the prevalence and examine the factors associated with the use of cannabis during the last 30 days in Colombian university students, in 2016.

Method: Analytical cross-sectional study. An analysis was carried out with 9,555 Colombian university students. The university student who accused of having used cannabis during the last thirty days was considered a cannabis user. Sex, age, perception of economic situation, academic and disciplinary problems in high school, and parental control characteristics were taken as variables of interest. For the analysis, the prevalence of cannabis was reported for each of the characteristics studied. Associations were estimated through generalized linear models, these analyzes were adjusted for the expansion factor.

Results: the prevalence of cannabis use was found that 9.7% (95% CI 9.1% - 10.4%) had used cannabis in the last 30 days; the men, who had parental control over friends and who claimed to have had disciplinary problems in high school, showed an association with cannabis use.

Conclusions: the prevalence of cannabis use in university students is high, compared to other countries in the region, characteristics such as the presence of academic or disciplinary problems in high school, as well as poor parental control were the characteristics that showed to have a greater relationship with cannabis use in college students.
