Abstract

Objective: Relational lingual frenum, sucking, and breastfeeding, in live newborns in a hospital in Pamplona.

Materials and methods: Qualitative, descriptive, correlational, and cross-sectional study to establish the relationship between tongue-tie, suck, and breastfeeding. One hundred four mother-child pairings were evaluated at a Hospital in Pamplona with the Tongue  test.

Results: Of the 104 binomials evaluated, 33.7% presented altered breastfeeding, and 7.7% presented altered lingual frenulum; 37.5% showed altered suction, the characteristics present in the lingual frenulum, sucking, and maternal breastfeeding were determined, taking as references studies carried out to compare them.

Conclusions: There is evidence of a close correlation between the short lingual frenulum that affects sucking and breastfeeding. However, its alteration is not the only factor that affects sucking processes and breastfeeding.
