Abstract
This document is the result of a theoretical revision of the different models and researches made around the concept of learning styles and its intervention in the development of virtual learning environments. Firstly, a brief review of the origin of the learning styles concept at a theoretical level is presented by describing main authors, models, and the categories that form them. Later, different studies carried out on the use of different models for the design are referenced as well as the evaluation of both virtual learning environments and adaptive hypermedia systems. Finally, the article shows the preliminary results of a project that is currently being performed at Universidad del Norte (Barranquilla, Colombia). This project aims at establishing the effects of a virtual teaching model focused on learning styles, in the academic performance of a group of university students.
