Ciudadanía juvenil: sin espacios ¿dónde construirla?

This research deals with the role of public space and the cultural infrastructure in identity construction and social link with the city in young people in the ages ranging from 14 to 22 years in Barranquilla (Colombia). Based on Interviews, surveys, field registers and workshops with a group of young people, it shows that young people in Barranquilla lack enough spaces for the construction of their citizenship and therefore their identity construction takes place in private space, such as bars and discos, and for this reason they make an inadequate use of the public spaces in the foundation of social links. It also shows that neither relations nor democratic practices are established in private spaces and there is always a permanent exclusion of the “Other”. This attitude does not lead to responsible or solidary behaviors which characterize the proper exertion of citizenship.
